Babcock Neighborhood School, Inc Media Credentialing Policy
Purpose & Scope
Babcock Neighborhood School, Inc. (“BNS”) recognizes the importance of media coverage in promoting transparency, stewardship, and community engagement. At the same time, the school must balance journalistic access with the privacy, safety, and order of its students, staff, and visitors. This policy sets forth objective, viewpoint-neutral standards for identifying credentialed media and granting special access privileges to BNS events and facilities.
Definition of Credentialed Media
For purposes of access beyond general public areas, “credentialed media” means individuals who regularly collect information while:
● Employed by, independent contractor for, or regularly engaged with a recognized news organization for gain, livelihood, or salary (e.g., newspapers, broadcast outlets, accredited digital media),
● Hold verifiable press credentials issued by a legitimate news outlet or professional journalism association, and
● Demonstrate a record of consistent content production (e.g., published articles, broadcasts, social media coverage with measurable readership or engagement).
By contrast, personal or parent-run social media pages, personal blogs, or self-published content are not considered credentialed media unless the creator provides verifiable evidence of meeting the criteria above and is approved in writing under this policy.
Access Categories
● General Public Access: All individuals, including those not credentialed, may attend open events (e.g. school board meetings, sporting events open to the public) in accordance with Florida’s Sunshine Law and public attendance rights.
● Media-only Access: Press boxes, sideline field access, reserved seating, media rooms, or other designated press-only spaces are reserved for credentialed media. Access is granted on a case-by-case basis, based on advance credential approval.
● Access to School Personnel for Interviews: Media credentials or attendance at a public event do not entitle any person to direct access to Babcock personnel for interviews, comments, or statements. All requests to interview or communicate with Babcock personnel concerning Babcock-related matters must be submitted through the Babcock’s Executive Director. Unauthorized direct contact with Babcock personnel on campus for interview purposes is prohibited. Babcock retains sole discretion to determine whether personnel will be made available, which personnel (if any) may respond, and the reasonable conditions under which any interview may occur. Babcock may deny requests that would interfere with instruction, employee duties, student supervision, privacy interests, campus order, safety, or other legitimate Babcock operations.
Credentialing Procedure
1. All individuals seeking media credentials must submit a written request at least five school days prior to the first event the journalist will cover. Requests should include:
o Name, affiliation, and contact information;
o Press or media credentials;
o Samples or links to prior published journalistic content.
2. The school’s Communications Liaison (or designee) will review requests based on this policy.
3. Credential approval or denial will be communicated in writing at least two school days before the event. If approved, the individual will receive an ID badge or temporary press pass to display visibly during the event.
4. BNS reserves the right to deny or revoke credentials at any time for failure to comply with school rules, disruptive behavior, or violation of any school policy.
Appeals & Complaints
Applicants denied credentials may submit a written appeal explaining why accreditation should be granted under the criteria above. Appeals will be reviewed by a small committee appointed by the Executive Director. Final determinations are made in writing.
Non-Discrimination & Equal Treatment
Credentialing decisions are made without regard to the viewpoint, editorial commentary, political beliefs, or personal status (including parent status) of the applicant or organization. All applicants are evaluated under the same criteria.
